A video of teachers doing a lip sync battle during a school assembly is going viral; the students loved the brilliant performance.

Cape Town, South Africa (14 March 2024) – A parent of a student at Camps Bay High School reached out to tell us about the brilliant lip sync performance one of the school teachers did for the school during a recent assembly. The fun performance was shared on social media and has since had hundreds of thousands of views.

Speaking to the school’s representative, we learned that the fun lip sync battle took place during the “prefects assembly”.

“At Camps Bay High School, the Prefects host a lively assembly once a term for all 800 students – it’s called the Prefect Takeover Assembly. Instead of our principal, Mr. Mostert, running the assembly, they takeover the programme and running of the assembly. These assemblies feature fun, interactive games like “what’s in the box” and involve both teachers and learners. The Prefects play a crucial role in fostering school spirit and a sense of belonging.”

“This year, the prefects added a lip sync battle between teachers and students, which was a huge hit. Mr. Mike Howell, along with a special guest, Mr. Nicholas Scott, stole the show and was crowned the “Lip Sync King” by the students. He received the loudest applause at the end of the performance to be declared the winner.” – Carol van der Spuy, Camps Bay High School

Mr Howell is a History and Social Sciences teacher at the school. He is also the teacher-in-charge of the prefects. Speaking about the performance, he says he could never have done it without the help of the students.

“I couldn’t have done this without the help of students! Morgan Stoffels and Ayla Maharaj-Goodman assisted in choreographing and rehearsing the piece with me. Also, a big shoutout to the teachers who are in the classrooms every day, navigating challenging environments.”

“I had a lot of fun doing it. This did take me out of my comfort zone quite a bit – doing something like this in front of the whole school and I did feel nervous but it was a great way to connect with the entire school. As much as this was a lot of fun, the true heroes are the teachers in classrooms everyday, in difficult spaces.” – Mr Mike Howell
