In a recap of The Voice, all four coaches were said to have fought over a South African talent, including will.i.am. Naturally, Mzansi’s ears perked up… until geography intervened.

Global (03 May, 2023) — South African ears perked up recently after The Voice Global took time to share a recap of one participant’s journey that began with all four judges fighting over the singer.

A throwback clip from 2014 shared a few days ago, many were surprised to learn that Elly Oh was a ‘South African talent’ as the headline described. Had we all simply missed a great songbird in our midst? Was loadshedding responsible for the entire nation missing out on the episode where Elly was revealed as a South African?

Well, after a few minutes into the clip, it came out that the reason we all missed Elly Oh’s South African roots, is because she doesn’t have any. Elly is from South Korea and based in Sydney, Australia—hence her auditioning for The Voice, Australia.

We couldn’t help but have a laugh at the mishap—after putting away our celebratory vuvuzelas, of course.

As one local put it:

“Stop playing with our emotions here in South Africa, we got load shedding and this talented girl is from South Korea.”—Roshana Nadasan.

The clip has since received over 1.2 million views, reminding us of the viral BBC video that saw South Africa confused with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Still, Elly’s recap deserves its moment in the sun (even if it’s a little far off from our usual sunset spots).

We’ll invite the unofficial South African to a braai anytime!
