Whether you like Wordle or hate it… the British Embassy in Washington won the word of the day yesterday with a tweet, and it will make you giggle.

Global (10 February 2022) – Very clever British Embassy!!! Very clever.

Wordle – a browser-based word game – has taken the world by storm with millions of users checking in every morning to have a go, but there is one thing that most Wordle lovers can agree on… and that’s the problem with American spelling.

Most days, the 5-letter word game is challenging enough to get it, but on other days, the American spelling drives British-English social media users crazy with the difficult task of getting a word with the “wrong spelling”.

And yesterday’s word – humor – did just that.

Humor and humour are different spellings of the same word. Humor is preferred in American English, and humour is preferred in all the other main varieties of English.

And while social media users complained about Wordle number 235, the British Embassy in Washington Twitter account decided to give us all a little hint with a very clever tweet.

Yes, American Wordle, you were missing another “u”.

The tweet has since been shared over 8,000 times and garnered over 50,000 likes, with thousands of social media users leaving hilarious comments.

“Wordle is certainly straining relations. I’m so cross I’ve had to sit down with a cup of tea to gather myself.” – KatieKoffee

“Sighs in British” – Supernova

“Despite solving Wordle 235 I did not find the solution funny!” – TheTonyJudge

“Same, bro. I was bloody upset this morning. And I am not even British” – Sandra_Sarav

“Yes, took me all six goes today to spell a word incorrectly.” – DiscoPie

Does the American spelling stop us from playing? No! Does it annoy us… a little bit. But it also keeps us all guessing… one more time!
