School is set to start in just 6 days time; here is the new official school calendar from the Department of Basic Education.

South Africa (09 February 2021) – The Department of Education has released the official new school calendar, and children are due back on the 15th of February 2021.

Deputy Minister for the Department of Basic Education Dr Reginah Mhaule shared the news on her Twitter account along with a printable image of the calendar for 2021 which you can see below.

Opening of schools was delayed until the 15th of February, which means many teachers will be feeling the pressure to make up all the important time missed out during this time. This means as parents; you need to do as much as you can to support your child and their educators through the next few months.

The best thing you can do to aid both your child and their educator is to be involved and supportive. We have a few pointers to help you support your child through this shorter school year.

Build a meaningful relationship with the teacher.

It is essential to have a good relationship with your child’s teacher. They will be able to advise how best to support your child through the academic year ahead, and you will be able to reach out should you need clarity on assignments and test requirements.

Remember to be supportive of your child’s teacher. They are taking on so much more than we realise.

Create a calm space in your home for homework.

Homework, studying and working on assignments can be very stressful, so make sure to have a calm space or even just a quiet time of day that is dedicated to these tasks. This means no distractions from loud TV, family arguments or younger siblings causing trouble.

Work on a study schedule.

Having a good idea of what tests and assignment lie ahead means you can plan accordingly, so there is no last-minute stress or cramming. Time management is an incredible tool to help reduce stress.

Get Help.

If you are finding your child is struggling to understand, reach out to the teacher for assistance and possible recommendations of a local tutor who can assist your child.

To all the parents, students and teachers out there, we wish you well for the 2021 school year. PS: if you have any helpful tips to share, be sure to leave them in the comment section.
