295 dogs and 505 humans united for one powerful promenade stroll in Sea Point and raised a small fortune for a charity carrying the veterinary care of Khayelitsha’s pets on its back.

Sea Point, South Africa (25 April 2025) — The Sea Point Promenade was taken by a storm of paws earlier this month thanks to the Mdzananda Animal Clinic’s Paws on the Promenade—2025 edition. On Saturday, 13 April, 295 dogs and 505 humans united for animal welfare from Labradors in tutus to Golden Retrievers in their Sunday Best.

This was the 7th year of Paws on the Promenade as led by the charity the Mdzananda Animal Clinic. Paws on the Promenade is a popular event for Mdzananda who are the only veterinary health care service and shelter in the vast Khayelitsha community (where around 300,000 companion animals live).

As Alderman JP Smith once said of the charity:

“One is humbled when you get to a place like Mdzananda. Like many animal welfare organisations, they have to perform miracles every day with very limited resources. For the last 28 years, they have served a very large area with big needs. Over time, they have added bit by bit to their facilities and services they offer the residents of Khayelitsha,” remarks Alderman JP Smith.

The stroll took promenaders from the Moullie Point lighthouse to the Sea Point swimming pools and back, making for the perfect opportunity to foster new friendships (for both humans and their pets).

This is largely because the event is as much about fundraising as it is about community. Pets and people dress up in the charity’s colour, chatter about love for animals wafts through the air, and everyone gets a boost beyond endorphins in knowing that they are supporting a powerhouse team of animal lovers with lion’s hearts.

In exciting news, the Mdzananda Animal Clinic has shared that this year, R37,580 was raised thanks to all who walked and wagged their tails!
