The burn is back for its 12th year… and the after-burn photos and videos are not disappointing at all!
Tankwa Karoo, South Africa – Since 2007 AfrikaBurn has brought the spirit of Nevada’s famous Burning Man to Stonehenge Private Reserve in South Africa – complete with crazy outfits, surreal art installations and all-night parties.
AfrikaBurn is the spectacular result of the creative expression of participants who gather once a year in the Tankwa Karoo to create a temporary city of art, theme camps, costume, music and performance!

AfrikaBurn aims to be radically inclusive and accessible to anyone. The touchstone of value in their culture will always be immediacy: experience before theory, moral relationships before politics, survival before services, roles before jobs, ritual before symbolism, work before vested interest, and participant support before sponsorship.
Nothing is for sale but ice at the event. Nothing.
There are no vendors, no advertising or branding. It just doesn’t fit in. It’s not even a barter economy – it’s a decommodified zone with a gift economy that’s about giving without expecting anything in return.
AfrikaBurn has become one of the most significant art festivals in Africa, drawing a large number of artists, musicians, vehicle enthusiasts and tourists to the desert in South Africa each year.
And every year the after-burn photos and footage showcase what a spectacular event it is!
Tom Parkinson, also known as “That Film Guy” put together a video which is quickly going viral, and one that will make you want to book your trip now… for next year.
“I present to you the Official Unofficial AfrikaBurn 2019 Aftermovie. I had an amazing time putting this video together because of all the incredible people that make this Burn video. Thank you to you all lovely humans.”

What’s not so great is the huge lack of diversity in this event. Barely saw a black face or a middle-aged face in the video.
