The Heartlands Baby Sanctuary started a food garden when they lost the bulk of their funding due to the pandemic; it is growing from strength to strength.

Somerset West, South Africa (08 October 2021) – In the last 5 years, the Heartlands Baby Sanctuary has offered temporary care and safety to 280 babies. The sanctuary’s goal is to temporarily care for a child and then reunite it with an existing or adoptive family.

In an average month, the sanctuary can go through 4800 nappies and 1900 bottles of formula. Staff and volunteers work 24/7 to ensure the safety of babies and children.

With the uncertainty caused by the pandemic, the sanctuary lost the majority of its funding. The team went on to establish a new project—a food garden.

The food garden would supplement their own kitchen costs, but it is mostly used to bring an income in from sales. As they discussed previously, it will aid in their goal of being a self-sustained organisation.

Since starting the garden, it has gone from strength to strength, including the happy addition of chickens and ducks. As the Seeds of Hope Garden grows, it opens a world of possibilities for the team.

What started as a goal for sustainability has turned into an opportunity to offer wholesome food to the community and a venue to work on skills development projects.

“And just look at how stunning our Seeds of Hope Garden is looking AND you can see just how far we are extending it to – another 3000m2 which will have hydroponics, aquaponics, citrus and so much more. This will soon become one of our key sustainability projects as well as a skills development platform.”

“If you are keen to assist us in any way in growing the garden, here in Somerset West, please contact nikki@heartlandsbaby.org
