Challenge

November is respiratory awareness month, staff at the Cardiopulmonary Rehab in Cape Town have a challenge to see how well you do breathing through a straw.

The “Breathe Easy” challenge was created to show what life is like living on limited air. The hope is to raise awareness for lung-related diseases such as COPD, asthma, cystic fibrosis or another chronic lung diseases.

People suffering from these ailments will tell you, every short breath counts. So don’t take your breath for granted. The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Cape Town Facebook page shared a challenge that would help create awareness this November.

“In order to create awareness we need to actually feel the difficulty of breathing many have to deal with on daily basis.”

People with these various Lung diseases often rely on 24-hour oxygen. If you have ever seen “The Fault In Our Stars”, you can comprehend the difficulties of not being able to breathe and having carry around a tank around. So what is the breath easy challenge?

The Challenge:

Find a paper straw, place the paper straw in your mouth and perform an exercise i.e brisk walking, cycling, running or any other exercise with the straw in your mouth. You can only use this method to breathe.

If you are fairly fit, you will easily be able to notice a difference in ability using only the straw to breathe. Post a photo with the hashtag #breatheeasychallenge and challenge your friends and family to do the same.

“Let’s create awareness about keeping our lungs healthy and feel how precious our breaths actually are.”

November is respiratory awerness month. How many of you thought about every breath you take. For most of us breathing is automatic. For those who have COPD, asthma, cystic fibrosis or any other lung disease, breathing is all they think about. Working as ‘n radiographer at Red Cross War Memorial children’s hospital I get to work with these patients every day. For most of them being more in the hospital than out. Anxious parents rushing their child to the emergency unit because they are struggling to breath. I was nominated by @hanrels to do the #breatheeasychallenge. For that 1 min I got to feel the difficulty of breathing many have to deal with on a daily basis. And being aware of every breath I take something that usually comes naturally. I will definitely not take my breath for granted again. I nominate @jmcilliers27 and @janikakroon to do the #breatheeasychallenge. Find a straw, place the straw in you mouth and do an exercise for example running or cycling. Post a photo or video with the hash tag #breatheeasychallenge and challenge your friends and family to do the same. Let’s create awerness about keeping our lungs healthy. @pulmonaryrehabcapetown

It really was a lot harder than it looks. Have you ever thought of each breath you take? For many of us breathing is automatic. For those who have COPD, asthma, cystic fibrosis or another chronic lung disease, its all they can think about. Don’t take your breath for granted. Straw challenge: Feel the difficulty of breathing many have to deal with on a daily basis. Breathe through this straw while performing your normal daily exercise routine.
