Some neighbourhoods may be experiencing a rise in fireworks; this is because the firework season has started. The NSPCA urges the public to be mindful of animals.

South Africa (24 October 2022) – Early November is the start of firework season around the world. South Africa has strict fireworks laws but laws are not often enforced and so reckless firework usage means many animals spend a total of two weeks living in terror.

We’re officially in the fourth and final quarter of 2022. With that comes celebratory occasions, often along with firework season with many South Africans celebrating Guys Fawkes on Saturday, November 5th, and others observing Diwali starting today, the 24th of October 2022.

The NSPCA has issued a plea to the public to please be mindful of pets and wildlife. In the past, we have shared tips from BirdLife South Africa, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital and The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa. Each has provided tips for caring for pets, wildlife and even small critters and horses.

“Fireworks frighten animals!

As we approach the ‘fireworks season’, the NSPCA implores the public to please refrain from making use of fireworks. Fireworks have an adverse effect on animals, causing many animals, including farm animals and wild animals, to become panicked and displaced. The use of lanterns is also not recommended due to the aftermath (animals getting trapped in the wires etc.)

Pet owners are advised to be proactive in preparing to protect their pets from the effects of fireworks.”

How to Prepare Your Pets

There are several ways in which we can prepare. To start, ensuring your animals are indoors and have a cool, safe space to sit is key. After that, the following can be tried to keep your animals calm.

Tire them out

On the day you know large amounts of fireworks are due to be set off, take your pets out and tire them out. The more tired they are, the more likely they will sit quietly before the start of the loud bangs. This will allow you to deploy other calming methods.

Stay home

Make sure you are home. Cancel plans if you made them, your presence at home will calm the overall mood of the home. Animals take comfort in your protection and will often seek you out when they are scared. Your mood will determine theirs, so stay calm.

Block out the sound

The part that is scariest for your pets is the loud, unpredictable bangs. Try to block out as much of the noise as possible by sealing all windows and doors. Mask it by playing calming music.

There are all kinds of music compilations on YouTube; you can find a full list of anything you may need. Take a look here.

Call your vet for advice

Vets are well prepared for firework season and can offer several useful tools. They can medicate your pet if your pet doesn’t react well or offer several other devices such as a plug-in that releases pheromones into the air which calms. You can also purchase supplements if you do not wish to medicate. For dogs, you can buy a vest that compresses them and feels like a hug.

The vest can be DIYed, you can find out how to make your own anti-anxiety wrap here.

Safe space

Create a safe space for your pet.

Treats and extra love

Go above and beyond to make sure they feel extra loved. Speak calmly and offer many cuddles. If you can provide distraction in the form of a nice treat, be sure to stock up. Your pet will love you for it.

You can find your nearest SPCA using our helpful list here.
