The Cat Village makes use of cosy blankets and straw to keep its 1,500 residents warm through the winter nights and in the day, they soak up all the winter sunshine.
Gauteng, South Africa (17 July 2024) – Winter’s chilly tendrils have taken hold of South Africa. While our Gauteng winter days are blissfully sunny (one of the perks of living here), the nights are bitterly cold. To protect against this, the helpful gents at the Cat Village go out each year armed with blankets and straw to insulate the shelters where 1,500 cats take their rest each night.
Irma Teller gives her heart, soul, and time to caring for 1,500 cats. She runs the Cat Villiage on the East Rand, a pro-life non-profit cat rescue charity.
Irma, a rescuer by heart, takes in cats and offers them long-term residence. She is surrounded by a group of volunteers who work to give the cats the best lives possible. The village is set in a beautiful garden giving the cats many natural spaces to relax and stretch out.
The cats have an enriching environment in which to live, stay healthy, and be well-fed. It is the job cat lovers dream of. Irma relies on donations and the support of volunteers to keep each kitty happy. She often shares photos of the residents in her care and how donations are used to support them.
The comfort of each cat is vitally essential to Irma and her helpful team. Thankfully, Gauteng is prone to dry winter conditions, so the cats will stay dry and have the advantage of sunny mornings.
The team encourages pet owners to keep their pets warm during the winter. They should bring them inside or provide warm blankets and durable shelter. They stress that if animals show any signs of being affected by the cold, they should take them to the vet immediately.
