The Swap Movement is here to change up our closets in the most fabulous and responsible way!
Gauteng, South Africa (23 May 2024) — A sustainable fashion movement is helping women in Gauteng change up their closets fabulously and responsibly. Started just last year, the Swap Movement has already garnered support from conscious fashion lovers from all walks of life—and for good reason.
Simply put, the Swap Movement is all about giving to gain. Good-quality clothes brought in earn givers credits, which are then used to shop (credits are determined by the items’ value). Events are hosted two to three times a month around Joburg and Pretoria, and around 50-60 women join in on the swapping joy after purchasing their tickets.
It’s a way that the Swap team are doing their part to combat overconsumption and the waste that the fashion industry is infamous for. And, it’s a great excuse to clean out your closet and welcome in other preloved items.
When considering the outstanding traits of the Swap Movement, founder Skye says:
“We’re not sure if its the fact that women can take home more than 13 quality items of clothes for a ticket price of R140 or that they get mimosas at the door on arrival.
“Our swappers describe the swaps as a blast or their new favourite event. Other customers have described them as therapeutic and their escape from the stresses of life.”
Around 1,300 clothing items take centre stage on multiple rails, where everything is organised according to size and colour (and yes, shoes and bags are welcome!).
“Embracing sustainable and slow fashion to South Africa, we are so proud to have brought a community of women together who share similar interests and have the opportunity to give them something fun to do on the weekend.”
