Millions of girls miss school during their period. Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project’s dedicated Program Partners are working tirelessly in communities across South Africa to address this issue head-on by providing sanitary products and empowering young women and men with knowledge, breaking down stigma.

South Africa (03 December 2024) – This #GivingTuesday, the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) is on a mission to shatter the barriers of period poverty and empower young women in South Africa.

It’s reported that a staggering 7 million girls miss school each month due to a lack of sanitary pads, losing a quarter of their precious learning time. This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a crisis that steals dreams and limits futures.

According to CTAOP, even more young people don’t receive the information and education about menstrual health that is necessary to keep themselves safe and healthy.

CTAOP’s Program Partners (PPs) are working in their communities day in and day out to support not only young women but young men too in breaking the patterns of stigma and ensuring youth have the resources and information they need to thrive.

In the vibrant city of Pietermaritzburg, Dlalanathi, a dedicated partner of CTAOP, is transforming lives by providing comprehensive education programmes to young women and men and essential hygiene packs.

In the Eastern Cape, the Small Projects Foundation distributed 42,390 sanitary pad packs last year alone through their Thandolwethu Project.

In celebration of Giving Tuesday, CTAOP will be sharing more information about this critical issue and the various ways PPs are solving it all week across its social channels, as well as raising funds to support its projects.

Be a part of the conversation by following CTAOP on their Facebook, Instagram, X, Linkedin or contribute to ending period poverty at https://ctaop.eifoundation.org/page/ctaop-period-poverty
