What began as a small group of parents sharing their experiences has blossomed into South Africa’s largest childhood cancer non-profit. For 45 years, the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation has been a source of hope, comfort and support for children and teens courageously facing cancer from diagnosis to recovery.

South Africa (03 November 2024) – More than 40 years ago a mother’s love ignited a movement.

Sadie Cutland, heartbroken by her daughter’s battle with aplastic anaemia, sought solace and support from parents on a similar journey.

She formed a parents’ support group in Johannesburg which offered a safe space to share experiences and provide one-on-one support to each other.

It was this quest that led to the birth of CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA in 1979, an organisation that has become a beacon of hope for countless children with cancer and life-threatening blood disorders.

From its humble beginnings, CHOC has since become South Africa’s largest childhood cancer non-profit, supporting children, teens, and families from diagnosis through every step.

This year CHOC celebrates 45 years of keeping hope alive and supporting many youngsters and their families along a very difficult journey.

What started as a need for support, is today a lifeline for many in need. These needs include psychosocial, emotional support and care, accommodation in 13 CHOC homes for patients to reside in, transportation of patients and caregivers in the fleet of 21 safe vehicles and so much more during their childhood cancer journey and beyond.

“Our aim is to raise survival rates to 60% by 2030, in line with the World Health Organisation’s Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer,” the organisation shares.

As CHOC turns 45, the organisation is on a mission to raise R450,000 to keep providing hope to children and teens diagnosed with cancer.

“Every donation, whether a one-time gift or monthly pledge, helps us continue this life-changing work!

“Can’t donate? You can still make an impact by sharing our campaign and spreading the word. Together, we’ll make this milestone a celebration of hope, generosity, and real impact,” CHOC appeals.
