By supporting the Jakes Gerwel Foundation’s Blue Crane Book Project this Christmas, you’re not just placing a gift in the hands of a child in need; you’re also nurturing a love of reading and helping them unlock their potential.

Somerset East, South Africa (25 October 2024) – Imagine a child, their eyes wide with wonder, holding a brand-new book in their hands – a simple gift, yet their biggest Christmas wish!

For as little as R50, you can make a lasting difference in the life of a child in need. The Jakes Gerwel Foundation invites you to sponsor a Christmas gift valued at R50 per learner.

Your generosity will help bring the joy of reading and a sweet treat to 3,000 learners in the Eastern Cape’s Blue Crane District.

Each gift includes a captivating storybook, delicious sweets, and a fun-filled toy. By supporting the Foundation’s Blue Crane Book Project, you’re not only fostering a love of reading but also investing in the future of these deserving children.

“We employ 40 reading assistants who provide intensive one-on-one reading sessions to children with severe reading disabilities.

“All participating schools have offered the Foundation a dedicated classroom, which our assistants use as reading rooms equipped with books, shelves, reading mats, and creative word games,” shares the Jakes Gerwel Foundation.

Offering a safe space for children with reading difficulties, these reading rooms are a beacon of hope, offering a place where children can explore their curiosity and develop a lifelong love of learning.

In keeping with their efforts to keep young minds inspired, the Foundation also brings children’s plays to the schools and hosts holiday programmes featuring word games, food parcels, face painting, and more.

“Through these activities, we aim to foster a sense of community and demonstrate that reading and books can be fun.”

Join the organisation in spreading the magic of Christmas and making a difference in the lives of young learners in Pearston, KwaNojoli (Somerset East), and Cookhouse.
