A son dedicated his coffee shop to his mother, by naming it after her

Dear Maria is a coffee and pátiserrie bar in Bedfordview, Johannesburg. The shop is a love letter to Maria, the mother of a beloved son.

There are many heartwarming stories being shared during the buildup to Mother’s Day and we love sharing the best ones with you.

A Bedfordview man decided to honour his mother by opening a coffee shop in her honour. It is a specialty espresso and patiserrie bar that was specifically designed to express love towards his mother.

Every detail and design is filled with meaning and love. In an interview with 10and5, the designer and illustrator Daniel Ting Chong shared his process and insight behind the project.

According to Daniel, the shop is a metaphoric written letter to Maria.

On the Instagram account for the Espresso Bar, they say,

“Dear Maria: Specialty multi-roaster espresso and patisserie bar that takes its name from a mother who loved her son more than he could ever know.”
