Parts of the Western Cape have flooded and the temperatures are dropping countrywide so we need to prepare for another blistering cold weekend in South Africa.

South Africa (10 June 2020) – It happened in the blink of an eye, our sunny days disappeared and winter burst in like an unwelcome guest. Every year, it takes us by surprise, unprepared and gearing us up for hours of complaint.

Another cold front has broken above South Africa, sending us all running for the warmest part of the house, grabbing the snuggest PJs and wrapping up in extra blankets.

Organisations have already started collecting blankets, jackets, waterproof shoes and more for families in Khayelitsha, where the water was reaching calf-height.

Ruby’s Rainbow of Hope has started a collection drive for people in the Western Cape. Janene Levy Nates is collecting on behalf of her daughter Ruby. You can contact her via the Facebook Group here.

“This is the CURRENT situation in Khayelitsha after just one night of rain. If anyone has warm clothes, rain boots, jackets, blankets, PLEASE let me know.”

The Sheltersuit has also officially been launched in the Western Cape. You can read all about it here. They take financial donations and build the incredible suits which are then handed out to the homeless.

The Sheltersuit is made up of the following elements:

  • Large hood
  • Integrated scarf
  • Lightweight and warm insulation
  • Large pockets
  • Strong, windproof cuffs
  • Zip-fastened sleeping bag
  • Wind and waterproof, yet breathable fabric

If you are outside of the Western Cape, be prepared. The cold front is predicted to hit most of South Africa. Aside from flooding, expect very low temperatures, snow, gale-force winds and rain.

We can all check for the items of clothing that don’t fit us. Those along with any warm socks, shoes, scarves and blankets can go to your nearest charity or feeding programmes, and drop the warm items off. If you are looking for a charity to donate to, here is a long list we put together for you.

Please also remember to bring your pets in and make sure they have somewhere warm to sleep.

Stay safe and stay warm!
