When Jessica and Will Northrop were planning their wedding, they knew that their furbabies needed to be part of their big day – they just didn’t realise the pups would land up making their nuptials go viral around the globe!

Virginia, United States of America (19 January 2022) – A pair of golden retrievers called Calvin and Kiwi are melting the internet’s hearts after stealing the show at their mom and dad’s wedding.

When Jessica and Will Northrop were planning their wedding, they knew that their furbabies needed to be part of their big day – they just didn’t realise the pups would land up making their nuptials go viral.

The Northrop family are incredibly active in the world of dog sports, where Calvin rakes in the medals at the Master level in agility competitions, but he is also a certified therapy dog who visited the oncology floor of her local children’s hospital pre-COVID-19.

Jessica says that just as he brightens hospital patients’ days, the pup helped her through a difficult period in her life.

“He is a once in a lifetime dog; he is more than a dog or a pet. He is my friend and my teammate. I tell everyone that he is a part of my soul that I didn’t know I was missing. I will forever be grateful to Calvin for saving me and for giving me the confidence to eventually find my true soulmate, Will.”

Talented Virginia-based photographer – Kristin O’Leary – captured the photos that are going viral, but the one Jessica loves most is where Calvin has a sign that says, “I loved her first.”

“The sign ‘I loved her first’ was perfect because I felt like it really captured our whole story,” she said. “Calvin and I have a bond that I can’t put into words. It is really special, and I hope it is something everyone gets to experience in their lifetime.”

Calvin served as ring bearer, matching the groomsmen in a navy tuxedo and red bow tie. Kiwi, a pup with special needs, walked down the aisle in a flower collar with the help of a bridesmaid.

“I knew that I wanted Calvin to be able to carry a basket down the aisle with the rings, so we practised it every night before dinner,” she said. “That trick was bulletproof!”

Kiwi also walked down the aisle with the help of a bridesmaid.

“We worked a ton on confidence-building with her working up to the wedding day, and she did amazing,” Northrop said of Kiwi, who has social anxiety. “I was so proud of her!”

Their wedding photos went viral when the dog news website Woof Woof shared them on its Facebook page, but the pups also have their own Instagram page – to follow more of their escapades.
