Courage has released several free resources for teachers to use this Child Protection Week to help children learn their rights and to fight abuse.
South Africa (29 May 2023) – Courage Child Protection was founded by Dr Dee Blackie as a way to create a community and share resources to ensure children receive the very best care and support. For Child Protection Week, she is providing a free resource for teachers. Courage is a South African organisation that specialises in Child Welfare and Protection.
“This year we have developed a simple presentation, with speaker notes, and a lesson plan workbook for all teachers, social workers and any other child protection officers who would like to engage with their learners and community during this important week.” – Dr Dee Blackie
Child Protection Week runs from the 28th of May to the 4th of June 2023. National Child Protection Week is commemorated in the country annually to raise awareness of the rights of children as articulated in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa and the Children’s Act (Act No. 38 of 2005).
The Courage School Presentation explains what child protection is, why it is important, what children’s rights are, and the child protection process to be followed in the event of any form of child abuse, neglect or exploitation. There is also a fun interactive rights and responsibilities game that you can play at the end of the presentation.
The School Lesson Plan Workbook can be printed in colour or black and white (back-to-back pages) and completed in class by learners (aged 12 and above). It explains what child protection is and why it is so important. It helps learners to create a vision for a safe world. It helps them to identify the child protection challenges taking place in their community, and the people they should be partnering with to keep them safe, using the Courage Community Map. It also illustrates the child protection process to be undertaken in the event of any form of child abuse, neglect or exploitation.
