The Cupcakes of Hope concept is simple, bake cupcakes or cookies, ask your family, friends and colleagues to donate R10 – R20 for a sweet treat and help us ‘Bake A Difference’ in the lives of children in need; it’s so rewarding and so much fun.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 February 2022) – Hearing the words “your child has cancer” must be one of the most terrifying words a parent can hear, and that is why Cupcakes of Hope has designed an infographic to educate the parents on the Early Warning Signs of Childhood Cancer.

We are very proud of our new and updated info-graphic as we believe early detection can SAVE lives.

With the help of Prof Jennifer Geel, a paediatric oncologist at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre, we have made sure that these Childhood Cancer Warning Signs are accurate and relevant. We asked Prof Geel why is it important to educate the parents on these early warning signs.

Prof Geel says: “Parents are the first people to pick up worrying signs in their children. They often report them to medical staff and are ignored or not taken seriously. If parents are educated, they can stick to their guns and make sure that their doctors and other medical staff investigate and refer their children rapidly and appropriately. The signs are really simple, but knowledge about them can save the lives of their children.”

According to Prof Geel, at least 1 in 600 children gets cancer in South Africa. The figure may be up to 1 in 400. Of these, in South Africa, only about a third reach the right place, i.e. a specialist paediatric oncology unit. Of those who do reach a POU, only half survive in many centres. In Johannesburg, the survival rate is better at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Wits Donald Gordon Medical Centre (about 75% at WDGMC).

However, this survival rate still does not reach that of children in other countries such as Brazil. Prof Geel says we need to improve this rate in South Africa, and one of the things that Cupcakes of Hope can do is to help raise awareness so that kids reach the right place more quickly, which gives them a much better chance; to fight and beat this disease!

Cupcakes of hope!

Cupcakes of hope is a registered non-profit and a community-driven cause that aims to raise awareness around childhood cancer and raise funds for children with life-threatening diseases. The concept is simple, bake cupcakes or cookies, ask your family, friends and colleagues to donate R10 – R20 for a sweet treat and help us ‘Bake A Difference’ in the lives of children in need; it’s so rewarding and so much fun.

Cupcakes Of Hope fundraisers are hosted by volunteers throughout the year in a wide variety of formats. The funds raised enable us to assist between 150-190 children every month by paying for their medical or day-to-day expenses; this is by far the SWEETEST way to help save a life.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we know things are uncertain at the moment, but if you are blessed to be in a situation to bake and help raise funds, please join our Cupcake Angel Team 2022 and help bake a difference. Any recipe can be followed as long as you remember to add the secret ingredient; it has to be baked with LOVE.

Help us create awareness AND raise funds for Children with Cancer by following these steps:

  1. Pledge to bake 24/48 Cupcakes and help raise funds for children with cancer.
  2. Register your fundraiser and receive a ‘Bake4Cancer’ apron, awareness leaflets and branded cupcake holders. .
  3. Bake your delicious cupcakes and ask friends to make a R10/R20 donation per cupcake (the fundraiser ends on 28th February). You can also host a Mini Pop Up at your work, neighbourhood or child’s school and help spread Cupcake Love across South Africa.
  4. Transfer funds into Cupcakes of HOPE bank account.

These fundraisers can be hosted at any time, but here are a few dates that you can #BakeADifference and join in the fun:

  • 15th of February – International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day
  • 17th of February – Random Acts of Kindness Day

With these Cupcakes of HOPE events, we want to give:

  • HOPE to the newly diagnosed,
  • SUPPORT those who are currently on treatment,
  • CELEBRATE those who have beaten cancer and
  • HONOUR those who gained their angel wings.
