Defenders of the nation, changemakers and charity heroes, your time has come; nominations are open for the Defender Awards, and this is how to get involved:

South Africa (12 June 2025) – A powerful new initiative is shining a global spotlight on South Africa’s unsung heroes and changemakers. The Defender Awards, launched by the iconic British adventure brand Defender, is calling on small-scale charities and non-profit organisations across the country to step forward and be seen.

Whether you’re working to protect endangered species, restore fragile ecosystems, support vulnerable communities, or defend our oceans, this is your moment. And the prize? Nothing short of change-making!

One exceptional South African organisation will be selected as a global winner, walking away with a £100,000 bursary, a rugged Defender vehicle* to reach the most remote areas, and access to a powerful network of mentors and experts to help supercharge their impact.

With a total of £1 million in global funding on the table, the Defender Awards aim to support grassroots organisations globally, creating real change in four key categories:

  • Defenders of the Wild: Protecting wildlife and indigenous flora under threat.
  • Defenders of Humanity: Supporting vulnerable communities in crisis response and recovery.
  • Defenders of the Land: Restoring and safeguarding delicate natural ecosystems.
  • Defenders of the Sea: Tackling marine pollution and protecting coastal environments.

This isn’t just about a grant. It’s about amplifying purpose-driven work and giving those on the ground the tools they need to go further, reach deeper, and do even more.

Entries are now open, with the deadline set for 16 June 2025. Small charities and NGOs with big hearts and bold missions are urged to apply online here.

A team of South African champions will help select the local finalists. Ross Holgate, humanitarian explorer of the Kingsley Holgate Foundation; Bryan Habana, legendary Springbok and founder of the Bryan Habana Foundation; and conservation leaders from Tusk Trust, Defender’s long-time global conservation partner.

Together, they’ll identify South Africa’s most impactful initiatives, with one going on to represent the country on the global stage.

So if you, or someone you know, is working tirelessly to defend what matters most, now’s the time to raise your hand.

Because in a world that desperately needs more changemakers, the Defender Awards are here to say: we see you, we back you, and we’re ready to help you go the distance.
