Over 20 community halls and centres have been opened to displaced citizens from areas affected by the flooding; disaster relief will be managed from these halls, helping people get back on their feet.
Durban, South Africa (13 April 2022) – The loss and devastation caused by the KZN floods have taken over our social media. It is heartbreaking to see, but so many people are reaching out to help. The EThekwini Municipality has shared a list of community centres that have been converted into shelters for those who have lost everything!
Please take a look below to find the one nearest to you. If possible, call the centre to see how you can help or if you are looking for a list of organisations to support, we have compiled a list here. We are adding to it as we get new charities reaching out, so keep an eye out.
The municipality will coordinate disaster relief at each of these locations, making sure people are clothed, warm, fed and have a space to rest.
Water supply has also been disrupted in many areas, so they are also delivering water tanks to key locations where people can access clean drinking water.
“Residents are informed of an interruption of water supply in several areas of the City. The interruption is due to heavy rains that have caused substantial damage to uMgeni Water infrastructure.
As a result of the damage, the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works is unable to transfer enough water to eThekwini reservoirs. This means that eThekwini Municipality is unable to meet the full water demand of its consumers.
Most areas in eThekwini will experience a shortage of water supply, with several areas already affected.
Technicians are undertaking repairs as speedily as possible.
Water tankers will be dispatched to affected areas.
The Municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused and requests residents to use water sparingly.”
