Doorway to Dignity is hosting its annual Pots of Hope potjie competition for World Homeless Day this weekend; they were gifted eco-friendly food packaging to serve the wholesome meals in.

Randburg, South Africa (05 October 2022) – This World Homeless Day, the 9th of October, Gauteng’s most vulnerable will have a day of good food and cheer, dedicated to them. Doorway to Dignity is hosting a “Pots of Hope” event on the 8th of October and they can now serve the meals in eco-friendly packaging!

Doorway to Dignity is a non-profit organisation that was established in November 2016. Their goal is to engage with homeless, displaced and vulnerable people to restore their dignity and renew their hope.

Pots of Hope was created by Doorway to Dignity in 2016 and has since become an annual event in which homeless and destitute people are treated to a dignified and enjoyable restaurant-style experience. It allows individuals and organisations to show love and compassion for people who struggle daily to survive, either by cooking or serving at the event.

The event is hosted as a potjie competition where entrants then donate the pot to the feeding scheme. Each pot goes a long way in feeding people in need. They are invited to get a plate, and sit and enjoy it while being treated to music and good company.

The organisation welcomes collaboration for the event and this year, they are getting a helping hand in the way of eco-friendly food packaging. This makes the difference they make, even greater! The donation from Enviromall will mean they have 600 containers and cutlery for meals. These are all biodegradable, making them all the better.

While feeding as many people as possible can be a task all on its own, now they do not need to worry about what they will use to feed those people, nor the impact it makes on the environment.

The event is going to be a massive one! 39 people have registered to enter the potjie competition so far which will mean many many delicious meals for the vulnerable.

“This year, in addition to distributing meals, we’ve invited about 60 people who attend our Saturday Church service to come and enjoy a delicious lunch in the restaurant we’ll be setting up, especially for the day. Many of these folk rarely, if ever, get to enjoy a restaurant meal. And so we consider it a privilege to be able to offer them a dignified dining experience, where they’ll be waited on by servers and will order their meals from a menu of selected potjies.

None of this would be possible without the many, many, MANY people and businesses who are supporting this event in a variety of ways. But we don’t want our thanks to get lost in this post, so will be running separate posts to thank you all.

Even if you’re not taking part in the event, feel free to pop by—purchase some refreshments from Enoch Salumu’s food and drinks cart (part of a job creation initiative in Windsor), and take a look at our chefs in action.

We look forward to seeing you there!”
