An organisation the empowers girls to stay in school by supplying them with monthly sanitary pads just did an amazing donation that will help thousands of girls!

Running4Pads is a group committed to empowering girls in school by collecting pads while at races and donating them to schools in need.

Running4Pads is made up of a group of runners. The people involved in the group are all avid runners and decided to use their passion for good. They encourage anyone going to their races, to take along sanitary pads. Running4Pads collect the donations and distribute them to schools in areas where a pad is considered a luxury.

The group was founded by Amanda Smith, who wanted to use her first marathon as a way to do good.  The organisation helps young women in 29 non-fee paying schools across the province to receive free sanitary pads.

Recently SPAR Western Cape boosted the great cause by handing over thousands of sanitary pads. The pads were donated at a recent SPAR women’s charity function, to representatives of the Running4Pads organisation.

Receiving the generous donation were Running4Pads ambassadors, Natassia Fredericks and Hassiem Fisher. They said that these would go a long way to keeping more girls in school.

“People don’t realise what a difference a little packet of pads can make in the life of a young girl who cannot afford to buy them, and has to stay away from school as a result,” commented Natassia at the handover. The donation came at just the right time too, as their next drop off is at the beginning of November.

Advertising manager for SPAR Western Cape, Elsabe van Zyl-Felix, said that this is a wonderful initiative to be aligned with and she hopes to support the cause going forward.

“We will continue with our support as long as we can.”

This amazing donation comes right on the heels of the news that sanitary pads will soon be zero-rated VAT items. It goes a long way in South Africa by making sure our young girls have a fair chance at education.
