A day at the beach is a treat for any child, but for children who have never had the chance to go, it could be the best day ever! Breadline Africa is preparing for its annual beach day and excitement is brewing!

South Africa (03 October 2023) – Every year, Breadline Africa takes children from disadvantaged communities, to have a fun beach day. The exciting day is highly anticipated as many of these pre-schoolers have never been on a school outing or been to the beach.

“Each December, at the start of our warm summer months, our team has the immense privilege of hosting an initiative that has become the highlight of our year – the annual Breadline Africa Seaside Outing.

Over four days, we take groups of disadvantaged children from some pre-schools we have supported on a fun-filled trip to the beach. For most of the children, this is not only their first school outing, but their first visit to the seaside.”

The team plans a whole day of activities including games, a delicious lunch and a gift bag to take home at the end of the day. It is jam-packed fun in the sun!

“The day starts with a long bus trip, full of excited chatter and exclamations as new sights are spotted. At last, the bus comes to a halt – and the blue ocean is right there!

Some of them can’t wait to get exploring and run joyously onto the sand, while others hang back. But it’s not long before they join their braver peers, playing and building sandcastles to their hearts’ content.

It’s a bit challenging to lure them away from the excitement of the games, but at lunchtime all activity comes to an end as everyone tucks into a generous meal. Then a very special, jolly man in a red suit arrives with a gift-bag for each child to take home.” – Selina Kleinsmith, Donor Care Manager

The goal this year is to take 240 children from four disadvantaged pre-schools to St James Beach, Cape Town. The beach’s cove layout and tide pool allows the team to safely chaperone the children while they dip their toes into the shallow water for the first time.

The team are currently raising funds to make this exciting beach day happen. If you would like to support them, you can donate here. They need R450 per child but any amount is welcomed. Just make sure to reference “Seaside” when donating so they know to allocate the funds to the beach day.
