Nosh Food Rescue NPC supports South Africans by rescuing perfectly good food from farms and grocery stores and sharing it with charities in need.
Johannesburg, South Africa (25 February 2022) – NOSH Food Rescue NPC is an organisation that helps prevent food waste by collecting food, on the cusp of expiring, from supermarkets to donate to charities in need.
Sell-by dates on packaging are what shops go by when restocking the shelves. Some stores will mark down the price on the last day of the sell-by date, and then if it doesn’t get sold, they throw it away. Yes, that is correct; food gets sent to landfills even if it is perfectly fine because of sell-by dates.
In South Africa, wasting food in such a manner is gutwrenching. We have millions of people living below the poverty line, going to bed hungry at night. Some charities struggle to stay open and are in desperate need of food to help feed the needy.
NOSH food rescue NPC, run by Hanneke Linge, was started to be the go-between retail food waste and the people of South Africa in need.
The organisation helps stock soup kitchens and feeding schemes with delicious food. Below is an example of a donation sent to Chefs with Compassion in January.
The food is perfectly safe and edible so rerouting it to help feed the needy and hungry is a much better use. Plus, food wastage in landfills is detrimental to the environment.
One of the initiatives the charity has done over the last four years has been to host odd plate dinners. The dinners were placed on hold during the pandemic. However, they are back now that things are returning to normal.
The dinners are run once a month and the funds raised are used to further support charities. You can find out more about how to join an Odd Plate Dinner via the Nosh Facebook group here.
