Since April 2022 when FoodForward was taken on as a beneficiary for the Nikela Trust Rounda Initiative, 400,000 meals have been served to people in need.

South Africa (31 January 2023) – FoodForward SA is South Africa’s largest food redistribution charity, focussing on alleviating hunger in the country and addressing poverty. The organisation aims to reduce hunger by safely and cost-effectively securing quality food and making it available to those who need it.

The organisation relies on the support of some of South Africa’s largest grocery stores and food distribution centres. They recently announced being included in the Nikela Trust Rounda Initiative which generates over 400,000 meals.

The Nikela Trust, which means “to give” in isiZulu, works with 26 non-governmental organisations. The trust was launched in 2018 and joined forces with well-known restaurants and fast-food franchises with the aim of strengthening community impact and eradicating poverty. Some of the well-known brands include McDonald’s, Nandos, Steers, Mimmos, Mochachos and Spur.

Since the organisation was made a beneficiary in April 2022, it has received donations towards over 400,000 meals. Steers specifically requested funds raised from purchases at its stores, go to feeding programmes and that played a massive role in how FoodForward SA was able to support people in 2022.

“Steers decided to focus their giving to feeding programmes and The Nikela Trust nominated FoodForward SA. Since April this year to date we have received monthly donations that have equated to a total of over 400 000 meals.

A huge thank you to this groundbreaking initiative and to Steers for strengthening our mission to redirect quality nutritious surplus food onto the plates of those who need it most.”

FoodForward SA is doing so much for South Africa in the way of policy changes related to food waste. You can stay up to date with how they feed millions and plan to save food from ending up in landfill by following Facebook here.
