It’s Friday, and you know what that means – time for another Friday Five! Your go-to guide for all the lekker things in life. From must-watch movies and binge-worthy series to new music, epic experiences and feel-good moments that make life just that little bit better.

Johannesburg, South Africa (31 January 2025) – It’s Friday, and you know what that means: time for another edition of the Friday Five! This is your ultimate guide to all things lekker, from movies and series to music, events and more.

So let’s dive into the good stuff that’s making life a little brighter this week.

🎬 New Movies

First up, let’s talk about “You’re Cordially Invited,” a delightful romantic comedy that recently premiered on Prime Video.

The film stars the ever-charming Reese Witherspoon alongside the hilarious Will Ferrell. The plot centres around two weddings that are accidentally booked at the same venue on the same day, leading to a series of comedic clashes between Margot (Witherspoon), a reality TV executive, and Jim (Ferrell), a widowed father.

Despite facing a barrage of mixed reviews, I found it utterly entertaining. Perhaps it’s my fondness for Reese Witherspoon but this film had me laughing and reflecting on the quirks of family dynamics. It’s a heartwarming reminder that even in chaos, there’s room for love and laughter. If you’re in the mood for a feel-good movie, give this one a watch.

🍿 Series to Catch Up On!

Now, if you’re looking for something to binge-watch, “Yellowjackets” should be on your radar.

This gripping series follows a high school girls’ soccer team whose plane crashes in the remote northern wilderness. The narrative oscillates between their harrowing fight for survival in 1996 and the complex lives they lead 25 years later. It’s a masterful blend of suspense, drama, and psychological intrigue.

The new season is set to drop on February 14, giving you just enough time to catch up on the previous episodes. Trust me, this is one series that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Now available on Netflix, Paramount+ and Showmax.

🎶 Music For Your Soul

On the musical front, James Arthur’s latest track “Celebrate” has been on repeat for me. It’s an uplifting anthem that encourages us to cherish the moments we have and find joy in the present. The melody is infectious, and the lyrics resonate deeply, making it a perfect addition to your feel-good playlist.

“Celebrate” is a track off James Arthur’s new album called PISCES, due to be released on the 21st of March 2025.

Additionally, Jeremy Loops has teamed up with the legendary Ladysmith Black Mambazo for an acoustic rendition of “Coming Home.” This version strips down the song to its core, highlighting the harmonious blend of Jeremy’s vocals with the iconic sounds of Ladysmith Black Mambazo. It’s a soulful track that evokes a sense of nostalgia and warmth, making it ideal for those introspective moments.

And the best news? This song is part of Jeremy Loops’ new album, which was released today!!! Available on all streaming platforms.

Also, I’ve now curated all these gems into a playlist on Apple Music! So if you’re looking for good vibes and soulful sounds to accompany your day, give it a spin. (Apologies to my Spotify peeps, but I’m team Apple.) Trust me, you’ll want these tracks on repeat all weekend.

📝 Things to Do

For those in Johannesburg, “My Fair Lady” is currently gracing the stage at the Teatro Montecasino. This classic musical tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a Cockney flower girl who undergoes a transformation under the tutelage of Professor Henry Higgins. The production is a delightful mix of humour, romance, and memorable songs that have stood the test of time. It’s a theatrical experience that promises to enchant audiences of all ages.

🩴 Another Thing

Lastly, mark your calendars for Flip Flop Day on February 14! This fantastic initiative is dedicated to raising funds for CHOC, the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa. CHOC provides comprehensive support to children battling cancer and their families, offering everything from accommodation and transport to emotional support. Participating in Flip Flop Day is simple: purchase a Flip Flop Day sticker, don your favourite pair of flip flops, and wear them proudly to show your support. It’s a fun and impactful way to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
