Gauteng has been suffering through a week-long heatwave with no relief from expected rains, instead of complaining, we thought of ways to do some good.
Gauteng, South Africa – Ok, we love summer, but things are really heating up in Gauteng. Parts have been moved to level 2 water restrictions due to the unrelenting heatwave and lack of rain.
We have been suffering as the dust continues to be swept up by oddly strong winds and it isn’t settling back down. Instead, it settles all over our homes, making allergy sufferers suffer that much more.
Feeling worn down by the constant heatwave, we started brainstorming how to be better and do a little good instead of complaining. Here is a list of how to help others cope through the heatwave.
- Freeze bottles of water to hand out to people handing out flyers or begging on the roadside. The tar is a magnet for sun and can easily be 5 degrees hotter than the actual temperature. Do the same for your gardener or anyone you see working outside.
- Collect old hats and sunglasses to give to people on the streets or working in the sunshine.
- If you can afford it, buy a bottle of sunblock and offer some to anyone you meet. The sun can be dangerous for those facing it for hours at a time. A little protection which is a luxury for most can go a long way!
- Umbrellas for rain are also great for blocking out the sun if you have older ones you don’t use, hand them to someone in need.
- Most people working outdoors can be seen wearing long layers; this is so they can be protected from the sun. However, it doesn’t help to manage the heat. If you have lightweight, protective clothing, you no longer need, pass it along to someone in need.
- Freeze large a Tupperware of water for your animals, ensure they have a well-shaded spot where they can stay cool or a sandy patch in the garden that is shaded.
What else can we do for those in need? Let us know in the comment section.
