Guess what? You can make a difference for the South African Bone Marrow Registry by simply watching a movie, outdoors, in one of Cape Town’s most gorgeous spaces—the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Nope, this is not a drill!

Cape Town, South Africa (23 November 2023)—If you were inspired to be a hero for the South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) after reading stories like that of Christine Roos, we’ve got an idea that might be right up your alley.

Unlike Christine (who faced the False Bay crossing earlier this week in an incredible fundraising effort), this event won’t require any freezing ice swims.

The SABMR is hosting an Open Air Cinema night at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens; a chance to sit back, embrace one of summer’s greatest pleasures in Cape Town, and pay it forward for those who need all the support they can get.

Think warm summer air, picnic baskets deluxe and a chance to spend time with loved ones whilst enjoying a movie in nature’s theatre. All proceeds from the event are going to the SAMBR’s Patient Assistance Programme—the same programme Christine’s daring fundraising efforts kept in mind.

For those who don’t know, the SABMR gives people the chance to be a stranger’s tomorrow.

For people who live with a blood disease, an immune disorder or leukaemia, finding a bone marrow match is the gift of a lifeline. Matches are not common, so increasing the number of donors means increasing the number of lives that can be saved.

As of December 2022, there were 78,333 registered SABMR donors.

While the main mission of the SABMR is matching donors to patients, the organisation also provides patient support through their Assistance Programme, which greatly helps financially struggling patients and families in paying treatment fees.

And to think, making a difference is as simple as signing up to watch a movie in one of Cape Town’s most iconic spaces!

The event takes place on 18 November, and the movie screening is The Rise of The Guardians.

You can book your tickets here.
