Whether you are a regular blood donor or need to have an iron-rich diet, this recipe book is for you! We cooked our way through the 2021 edition and loved it, so we are even more excited to try out the 2022 recipes!
Cape Town, South Africa (15 November 2022) – When donating blood, all your stats are checked to make sure it is safe to do so; one of those is your iron levels. To help keep iron levels up, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) has put together a second cookbook that is designed to feed you all the good things!
They are hoping to “iron-spire” more people to cook good food that is good for your blood and will help you successfully donate blood on your next visit to the donor centre.
“Maintaining a good Haemoglobin (Hb) level is very important for your health as well as for donating blood. We test your Hb level every time before you donate blood. In order to donate blood, men’s Hb level needs to be 13.5g/dl and females’ 12.5g/dl. Often blood donors get deferred because of a low Hb level.”
This is the second edition of the cookbook. The first was released in 2021 and included delicious meals such as Green Biltong Salad, Hearty Lentil and Tomato Soup, and yummy Lamb and Bean Stew.
The 2022 edition was released this week and includes Vegetarian Lasagne, Steak with Harissa Cauliflower and Chickpea Brownies!
There are 10 delicious recipes as well as a helpful article all about Iron and what it does. They have focused on animal-based sources and plant-based sources of iron—an important thing to factor in with so many varied dietary requirements.
We cooked our way through the 2021 cookbook and really loved the recipes. Now we are looking forward to the next 10 delicious recipes. The cookbook is available to the public for free, you need only download it and print it or keep it on your nearest device.
