Solar is becoming a vital part of life but many don’t have the means to install it; the Johannesburg SPCA has started a fund as they can no longer afford to run a generator to keep the clinic functional.

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 May 2023) – The Johannesburg SPCA is facing serious setbacks due to the loadshedding. Their phone lines go down which means they cannot be reached if an emergency occurs, the clinic cannot operate and the fridges that store the vaccinations at a set temperature are struggling on the generator. The team have decided they can delay the task no longer, and will need to install solar to keep them operational during the blackouts.

Many South Africans are having to face the reality that loadshedding is making things really difficult. The SPCA hopes that their small goal of raising R100,000 for solar will help them protect the animals who need them most. They set up a crowdfund and have almost raised R10,000 towards the goal.

“Without power, we cannot receive communication regarding run-overs, animals being abused or needing rescue, which could result in the animal dying. Without power, our theatre cannot operate, which could lead to losing an animal on the table. Our fridges die – resulting in thousands of rands wasted as the vaccinations/medicine will all go off.

Various quotes have been handed in, totalling astronomical amounts. All we need to run is the bare necessities: our computers, phones, fridges for the vaccinations and our server that keep almost all these things up and running. But we simply do not have the funds available to pay for solar.

We are desperately pleading with our supporters to make an R10 donation towards this project. We will gladly provide a section 18A tax certificate for ANY donations received.”

The SPCA plays a vital role in the community; they hope that the community will aid them in this plea. If you would like to support the crowdfund, you can do so here or email the team to help in other ways.
