The Kariega Foundation has adopted a new programme under its umbrella, a youth-based dog education programme that will uplift Marselle’s children and their dogs.

Kenton-on-Sea, South Africa (20 February 2023) – The Kariega Foundation started a Dog Education Programme just outside of Marselle, Kenton-on-Sea. The programme launch saw seven children and their dogs attend the first class over the weekend.

Joné Haesslich, the Kariega Foundation Manager, and co-workers Malibongwe Mangele and Nosi Daki ran the first class and it was a great success. Jo has been dreaming of running a programme like this for nearly three years now, inspired by the success of Funda Nenja and EduPaw

The class was facilitated at the Lukhanyo Pre-School in Marselle. Joné shared the exciting news on Facebook.

“My name is Jo Haesslich, Kariega Foundation Manager, and with my co-workers Malibongwe Mangele and Nosi Daki, we had a very successful afternoon with the 7 students and their dogs. We are using the model of both the brilliant Funda Nenja and amazing Edu-Paw, focusing on education but also including some dog training. As the Kariega Foundation was born out of the Kariega Game Reserve, we will also do environmental education during the classes. The idea is to instill the love and respect for animals in the students and their families and then it is easier to bridge the gap of caring for wildlife, as tourism at the game reserves is the biggest employer in this area.

Thank you toor opening your facility to us! Thank you in advance to all the more experienced individuals I will be in contact with to ask lots of programme-related questions.

We are looking forward to see what the year brings! Can’t wait!!!”

Each of the children was given copies of the ‘Hero in My Hood‘ activity books and worksheets. These are great and teaching lessons for basic animal care.

This is only the beginning, we will be sure to update you as the classes progress.
