The critically acclaimed South African movie, Krotoa has just landed a massive international distribution deal meaning viewers across the globe will see it.
Krotoa is inspired by real-life historical events. It was awarded 8 international film awards and released earlier this month. Since its release the movie has signed a major deal.
It was announced that Krotoa has joined forces with Shoreline Entertainment in California. This will mean the movie will be distributed to viewers across the globe. It was locally released in 25 cinemas across South Africa and was well received by critics. The movie grossed nearly half a million during its opening weekend.
Krotoa is based on real-life historical events that took place in South Africa in the 1650’s. The story is about a young eleven-year old girl, who is removed from her close-knit Khoi tribe to serve Jan van Riebeeck. She is stuck between two cultures while facing challenges on either side.
“It was very important to me to be part of this film and to learn more about an incredible woman. It has also opened my eyes to the discourse around this important subject,”
The movie has been selected as the gala opening night film at the Toronto South African Film Festival in October. Writer Kaye Ann Williams and lead actress Crystal-Donna Roberts will be attending this wonderful occasion.
“I am very excited about taking another South African film overseas and hope that it will be seen as something positive. I am very excited about everything that is currently happening in our film industry,” – Crystal-Donna Roberts, lead actress in Krotoa
We are really excited to hear all the great things happening in the South African film industry too! Onwards and upwards!
