More than just a sporting event, the Golden Games in Pietermaritzburg allowed oldies to let loose, have fun and showcase their vitality.
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (01 September 2024) – Just as a child’s laughter can brighten the darkest day, there is just something about the joy of a senior citizen that fills one up with warmth and comfort inside.
And it was smiles, laughter and fun all around for KZN senior citizens as they got their takkies out to play and participate in the uMgungundlovu District Golden Games held this past week at UMsunduzi Athletics Track Stadium in Pietermaritzburg.
A reminder that life is meant to be enjoyed, not merely endured, the Golden Games were a breath of fresh air for the oldies who proved to be quite young at heart.
The event is aimed at extending a healthy expectancy and a strategy to improve the quality of life while preventing chronic illness.
According to the KZN Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, it also encourages active and healthy lifestyles among the elderly and gives them a platform to socialise and discuss the challenges they face.
These “golden oldies” participated in various sporting events such as Athletics, Brisk Walk, Duck Walk, Ball Pass and Kick, Ball Relay, Goal Shooting, Juckskei, Dress Up Race, and Brisk Walk.
If those kicks, passes and smiles are anything to go by, it’s safe to say that regardless of the years that have passed, age is merely just a number, and joy knows no bounds!
