Proudly South African… and PROUD of South Africa!
London, United Kingdom – In celebration of the 20th anniversary of The Lion King in London, legendary South African composer Lebo M treated a London audience to an incredible extra performance featuring the Drakensberg Boys Choir.
South African musician Lebo M has been involved with The Lion King since the original 1994 animated film, through the numerous stage productions around the globe all the way up to the film’s live-action remake 25 years later. The Drakensberg Boys Choir are currently travelling to the UK to perform for a variety of audiences.
In 2018, the choir competed at the 10th World Choir Games, held in Tshwane, South Africa. They won the Champions’ Title for ‘Scenic Pop’, with one of the highest scores in the entire competition. After their very first competitive competition, the Drakensberg Boys Choir has now been placed as the highest-ranking Boys’ Choir in the world, on the Interkultur World Ranking List.
This is only the fifth time the choir is touring to the UK, in its 52-year history; with its last visit taking place in 2004. The 55-strong choir’s performances are mostly free while any funds generated from paid-performances will go towards ‘The Legacy Project’.
The Legacy Project is an initiative initiated by The Drakensberg Boys Choir School and includes a partnership with the Champagne Valley Trust and several KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education schools in the local vicinity. The vision of this project is to improve the quality of education in the community through the teaching of choral music.
