Lent is a religious observance where people give up luxuries to commemorate the 40 days that Christ fasted in the wilderness. In the Western Church, it runs from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday. These are the most impactful things people have given up.
During Lent, people give up things like meat and chocolate or other various lifestyle choices. There is a new trend however, that seems to have taken over during Lent.
People have started giving up things that will create meaningful change. We were browsing the internet and stumbled onto a story where one woman had chosen to give up plastic. She felt it was important to give something up that benefitted the planet and not only herself.
She committed to giving all kinds of plastic meaning no straws, no plastic bags, no microbeads, no coffee cups and no food packaging. Her goal, to have it become such an ingrained habit that she would continue to practice this lifestyle long after Lent had ended.
We truly valued her outlook on the matter and decided to see what other meaningful changes were being made for the religious observance. The Church of England even urged Christians to give up single-use plastic this year.
“The Lent challenge is about raising our awareness of how much we rely on single-use plastics and challenging ourselves to see where we can reduce that use.
“It ties in closely with our calling as Christians to care for God’s creation.” – Ruth Knight, the Church’s environmental policy officer.
This is what we found:
For lent I am giving up products that are tested on animals, because I believe animal testing is cruel. I also believe it’s cruel to keep the remaining CA12 in prison. @JerryBrownGov please grant clemency to the remainder of the CA12, and help us win the case against cruelty. pic.twitter.com/OGH8z3xQFi

A bit late and will take a few days to plan but giving up plastic is a good way to show piety for Lent. It’s not only for me but for the environment as well.

If you are partaking in Lent, what have you given up?
