The skate park at Richards Bay’s Alkantstrand Beach has gotten a vibrant dose of art thanks to Sydney Mabaso; making the spot more welcoming and a place locals are proud of!
Richards Bay, South Africa (06 June 2024) — There’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint, a splash of creativity and some epic art to inspire an area. For Alkantstrand Beach in Richards Bay, a tall order of all of the above has breathed new life into the beloved Skate Park thanks to a local artist and what we’re sure have been many cans of paint.
Artist Sydney Mabaso is behind the Skate Park’s makeover. For locals, the design has made the park feel welcoming and has been praised as something that needs to be safeguarded from any unsolicited graffiti. Indeed, true to its purpose, the public artwork has added a sense of value worth protecting, as well as an important dose of pride in the Alkantstrand Beach area.
Some parts of the art depict a skater in action against a sunset skyline silhouette, while other encompass spots of natural inspiration in bold translation. Together, they tell the story of the beach’s natural vibrance, as well as its manmade ones.
Meanwhile in other wholesome creative news in other parts of our country and beyond it, Johannesburg is putting on a thrilling exhibition set to spotlight South African superheroes, The Free State Art Collective are spotlighting their creatives as part of their 40 Artists for 40 Days showcase, The National Arts Festival Makhanda is preparing for its 50th birthday and Dr Esther Mahlangu’s latest solo exhibition in New York has been a happy success!
