Dr Clifford Bull from Craig View Veterinary Clinic took to social media to discuss the Malinois breed that is currently trending due to a new Channing Tatum movie.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 February 2022) – Dr Clifford Bull, also known as Dr Cliff, has shared some incredible insight after the Malinois dog breed started trending on social media. The spike in popularity is due to the breed co-starring in a movie with Hollywood heartthrob Channing Tatum.

Dr Cliff, while advocating for the breed, wanted to raise awareness about it as well as encourage people to adopt the breed from the SPCA versus getting a specifically bred puppy. Dr Cliff wants to encourage people to understand the breed before going out to get one. As a Malinois owner himself and a leading vet in Johannesburg’s East Rand, he understands exactly what the breed needs.

The breed is classed as highly intelligent, athletic, muscular, and exceedingly devoted. It is also very prey driven and can be prone to chasing children, cars and other animals. These are qualities that make for excellent working dogs, as Dr Cliff proves with his own dog Blaze.

He took to Facebook to share his thoughts.

“We are sure you have seen the post about a Malinois featured in the movie “Dog” starring Channing Tatum and a highly trained Belgian Malinois.

Like all popular movies featuring animals they are often responsible for the rise in puppy sales for their respective breeds.

And that’s what we expect with this movie and people will want their own Belgian Malinois. This is not going to end well for this breed.

This breed can be amazing in the right hands but they require a lot of everything. If you are considering getting a Malinois, please, first go meet some Malinois of all ages at your local SPCA – you will find a few at every branch!

The simple truth is that Mals are “mal”, as loyal and lovable as they can be, were never meant to be a family pet.

They need a perfect combination of stimulation, physical activity, and socialization, and a failure to keep them busy could result in them becoming challenging to handle.”

By understanding exactly what the breed needs, you will be able to cater to that and provide a loving, stimulating home. But education and research are key factors!

As Dr Cliff encourages, you can visit your local SPCA or type in “Malinois” on Facebook Search to see which shelters near you have a dog up for adoption. Then go and spend some quality time interacting with the dog so you can understand their energy levels and skill.

We are so used to seeing Tatum alongside Hollywood’s latest “It” girl so we are excited to see that this time, it’s a dog in need of love, kindness and a bit of patience.
