Retired maths teacher Elaine Smallbones gave 25 children help with understanding multiplication tables and other basic concepts.
Mpophomeni, South Africa (04 March 2024) – Funda Nenja, a dog training initiative, runs in the township of Mpophomeni, near Howick, in the KZN Midlands of South Africa. They focus on animal welfare in the area by providing dog training lessons to the children and much-needed vaccinations for their beloved dogs. However, they recently got to witness helpful maths lessons being given thanks to retired teacher Elaine Smallbones.
The usual lessons teach the dogs some obedience skills but also help the children bond with their pets to form a deeper connection. The classes help educate children about animal welfare and encourage them to show their families how to treat animals too.
The maths lessons were a helpful addition that will help the Funda Nenja participants going forward. They covered multiplication and other basic concepts; however, “Mama Mathambo”, as Elaine is affectionately referred to, taught the 25 learners various ways to understand maths concepts.
“We held a slightly different holiday workshop last week thanks to Elaine Smallbones, a retired maths teacher. Mama Mathambo, as Elaine is known, is passionate about maths literacy and very generously helped 25 Mpophomeni learners to see tables and other basic maths concepts in a totally new light. Hopefully, these kids will start the new school term with a clearer understanding and a greater confidence in their maths ability.
Thanks Elaine!”
Now that the youth are back at school, they can put what they learned into practice.
