Mbongeni Buthelezi transforms discarded plastics into large-scale masterpieces, proving that even the most mundane materials can tell extraordinary stories about life and conservation.

South Africa (05 November 2025) – Art has a way of showing us that there is always another layer to explore and another story to be told. Just when you think you have seen it all, something extraordinary appears, like someone who can transform discarded plastic into stunning paintings. South African artist, Mbongeni Buthelezi does just that.

Renowned for his innovative “plastic paintings,” Mbongeni uses recycled plastics to create large-scale artworks that tell stories of everyday life. From ordinary people going about their routines to the delicate movements of marine life, his pieces are relatable and extraordinary. What makes his art even more remarkable is that it carries a powerful message about sustainability. Through his work, Mbongeni advocates for recycling, showing that discarded materials can be repurposed into something beautiful and meaningful.

His acclaimed Fish Series, for example, celebrates the beauty of marine life while challenging viewers to rethink the way we use and discard plastic. Each piece is a reminder that creativity and environmental activism can go hand in hand.

This year, his extraordinary work was displayed at the Plastics Recycling Conference (#PRC2025), offering audiences a chance to experience firsthand the unique blend of artistry, storytelling, and sustainability that defines his vision.

And when critics suggest that he might eventually run out of plastic to work with, he responds with wisdom.

“They fail to comprehend that I would celebrate such depletion. That represents the very goal of my endeavor!”
