Ocal Global recently made the beach more accessible to people in wheelchairs by laying a special mat on the sand and providing an adapted wheelchair.

Cape Town, South Africa (03 March 2020) – Ocal Global rolled out a life-enhancing tool for differently-abled people in the Western Cape. The non-profit organisation was founded by Nicolene Mostert and Alun Davies, who wish to remove the limitations set for differently-abled people.

“Our mission is to redefine the notion of ‘limitations’ and change the perception of “disability” to show that there’s no such thing as a disability but rather ‘differently-abled people’.

By providing opportunities and support to differently-abled people so they can pursue active lifestyles. Without these opportunities, it is impossible for any athlete to realize what they can achieve.”

Earlier this week, a special mat was installed at Muizenberg Beach. The mat allows wheelchair users to access the beach. This is a first for the Western Cape!

Alun spent the morning training the lifeguards on how to use the mat and how to assist getting a wheelchair down to the edge of the mat.

They also have access to specialised wheelchairs to enable water play. The unique design allows the chair to get right down to the shoreline without sinking into the sand.

For more information, you can contact Ocal via their website here and Facebook here. They hope to see more of these mats placed on beaches across South Africa.
