If Netflix’s latest love story ‘Find Me Falling’ gave you just the right fix of romance, comedy and dreams of Cyprus, we’ve got one more reason to fall in love with the film: it was directed by a South African-Cypriot Stelana Kliris!
Global (25 July 2024) — Like many other South Africans searching feverishly for a feel-good film with just the right amount of romance, comedy and escapism, I happily found my fix in Netflix’s latest love story, ‘Find Me Falling’ writes Good Things Guy’s Ashleigh.
While there’s nothing quite like mentally escaping from the Southern Hemisphere’s winter blues to a gorgeous Mediterranean island where a heartwarming and cheesy (in the best way) love story unfolds, it came to my joyful surprise to learn that even though the story might not share South Africa’s weather patterns, it does share something even more exciting.
Writer and director Stelana Kliris just so happens to be a South African-Cypriot. Raised in South Africa and an alumna of Rhodes University, Stelana moved to Cyprus, where she worked in the film industry for several years before ‘Find Me Falling’—a film she affectionately dubs “a love letter to Cyprus”.
The film climbed to Netflix’s top-watched English-language film in just a few days, priming it to be one of the best rom-coms of the year.

About ‘Find Me Falling’
On a remote part of the island, we meet John Allman (Harry Connick, Jr), a rockstar desperately trying to escape his life after his latest album didn’t exactly go as planned. Instead of the serenity and isolation he expects to find after moving into a house on a cliff away from society in Cyprus, he is met with a most unusual situation—his cliff happens to be one where people go to find their own escapes from life…permanently.
The comedy unfolds as the irony does. Because of his home’s unfortunate location, he is often forced to call a very friendly and welcoming Cyprus police officer who becomes more than just a friend, but the reason Harry reunites with the woman he fell in love with on the island decades before— Dr Sia (Agni Scott).
Not to mention many other characters who bring Cyprus to life and, in turn, help Harry discover his new one.
Think Mamma Mia with less songs and dance routines, dry humour and the kind of love story that reminds us all that we need each other—even in the times we never want to see another person ever again.
You can catch ‘Find Me Falling’ on Netflix.
