The power of generosity came alive when organisations in a position to make a difference came together to embark on a labour of love to renovate the previously hazardous roof at Sonstraaltjies Early Childhood Development Centre. The new roof not only meets safety standards but also creates a brighter, more inviting environment for young minds.

Hawston, South Africa (27 November 2024) – The little learners of Sonstraaltjies Early Childhood Development (ECD) Centre in Hawston can look forward to brighter days thanks to the kindness and generosity of community partners who have made their learning space safer and more welcoming.

The Rotary Clubs of Hermanus and Newlands, the Enlighten Education Trust and a large international corporation joined forces to safely remove and replace the ECD’s old asbestos roof. The existing asbestos roof presented safety and health risks for young children and teaching staff, and through funding efforts, the new and safer roof structure was successfully achieved.

The project was a collective effort, with the corporation and the Newlands Rotary Club contributing R290,000 towards the total project cost of R500,000.

The Hermanus Rotary Club also provided R53,000 for vital internal repairs. The new roof now meets all necessary health and safety requirements, allowing Sonstraaltjies to proceed with its re-registration process with the Department of Basic Education.

“The commitment shown by our partners in funding this project highlights the importance of ensuring that early childhood development (ECD) centres can operate safely and effectively,” commented Natalie Scholtz, President of the Hermanus Rotary Club.

“We are now focused on raising the remaining R220,000 needed for the next phase of repairs, which will include new eaves, veranda ceilings, internal and external painting, and the replacement of facia walls.”

Rodney Nissen, Project Manager at Enlighten Education Trust, added:

“Projects like these exemplify the power of community collaboration. The safe, upgraded facilities at Sonstraaltjies will provide a nurturing environment for young children to learn and grow, setting a strong foundation for their future.”
