Tekkie Tax is an organisation that raises funds for over 250 NGO’s in South Africa by selling shoelaces and stickers for the big Tekkie Tax day every year.
Tekkie Tax is an annual day where school kids and professionals get to wear their tekkies and funky shoelaces to school and work. All they need to do to wear the shoes is buy a Tekkie Tax sticker from a local distributor.
Every year the funds raised from the sale of the stickers and shoelaces go into a bigger fund that assists various NGO’s in SA. The NGO’s are split into 5 different categories: Animals, Bring Hope, Children, Disability and Education. It’s as easy as “A B C D E”
2017 was a very tough year for South Africans but the Tekkie Tax still managed to raise R8,239,265.00 on 27 May 2017.
In 2017, 264 Non-Profit Organisations and 621 Companies participated. Together, they sold 407 000 stickers and 102 000 pairs of Tekkie Tag shoelaces!
The website lists all their beneficiaries by the A B C D E categories mentioned above. Animal organisations focus on animal welfare and sterilisation. The ‘Bring Hope” focuses on uplifting the poorest people in South Africa and giving them hope, organisations like Meals on Wheels are supported in feeding the homeless.
Children organisations focus on abuse preventions, safe houses and childhood cancer support while the Education organisations work to empower the youth and educate the public on cancer awareness. The final category is Disability that assists organisations such as the Special Olympics and Epilepsy South Africa.
The next National Tekkie Tax Day is on 25 May 2018. The next design is all about the sparkle and the motto for 2018 is “Leave a little sparkle and wear your Tekkies!”
