Water is one of our most essential needs. Unfortunately, many schoolchildren and teachers in Greytown have struggled to access a reliable water supply for a long time, often having to collect rainwater or draw water from a nearby river. Thankfully, those challenges are now behind them, thanks to a generous donation that will make a meaningful difference in their daily routines.
Greytown, South Africa (20 March 2025) – Being able to step into a kitchen or bathroom to open the tap without having to think twice about whether or not water will pour out is something many of us wouldn’t necessarily consider a privilege.
However, for many families and school children in the underserved parts of Greytown in KwaZulu-Natal, reliable and safe water is often hard to come by.
A team of volunteers from Gift of the Givers brought much-needed aid, and they set the ball in motion to assist and provide water supply after learning about the circumstances of no reliable water source, particularly at the Buhlebomvoti Special School.
Gift of the Givers, Africa’s largest disaster response non-governmental organisation, has been at the forefront of humanitarian efforts across South Africa and beyond since its founding in 1992. Known for its rapid response to crises, including drought relief, disaster recovery, medical interventions, and hunger alleviation, the organisation has a long-standing commitment to ensuring access to clean water. Through borehole drilling, water purification solutions, and bulk water deliveries, Gift of the Givers has been instrumental in providing sustainable water access to communities in need, just as they have done once again for Buhlebomvoti Special School.
According to the Gift of the Givers, learners of the school were forced to depend on rainwater as a source of water supply and during dry periods, educators and staff had no choice but to fetch water from a nearby river, making daily operations extremely difficult.
But because no child or person should be deprived of the very basic need of clean, safe drinking water and proper sanitation, the charity organisation recently handed over a newly constructed borehole.
The donation will make a world of difference in uplifting the school community and ensuring classes continue without disruptions.
“During the official handover, our teams distributed 139 hygiene packs to the children. The School Principal and teachers expressed their heartfelt gratitude, overwhelmed with joy at finally having a permanent solution to their water struggles,” Gift of the Givers concluded.
