Capetonians will be able to go to one of their favourite malls to help contribute to the Western Cape Blood Service’s goal of 1000 units of blood.

Western Cape, South Africa (23 May 2023) – The Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is excited to announce that their big bleed – 1 Day – 10 Malls – 1000 Units of Blood – will take place this coming Saturday, 27 May 2023. This will be the fourth time that WCBS hosts this initiative. During winter, blood stocks typically decline and it is a struggle to maintain the required 5-day blood stock levels.

This challenge aims to collect 1000 units of blood on the day. As the need for new blood donors increase, WCBS increased the target for this challenge and would like to welcome at least 200 new blood donors to start their remarkable life-saving journey.

“We are inviting our donors to please support us by bringing a friend when you come and donate and in doing so inspire others to donate blood. We are hoping to welcome 200 or more new blood donors to our blood donor family,” says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager for the WCBS.

Join WCBS on Saturday, 27 May 2023, from 09:00 – 16:00 at any of the following 10 participating malls:

  • Blue Route Mall – Tokai,
  • Kenilworth Centre – Kenilworth,
  • Bayside Mall – Table View,
  • N1 City Mall – Goodwood,
  • Tyger Valley Shopping Centre – Bellville,
  • Capegate Shopping Centre – Brackenfell,
  • Liberty Promenade Shopping Centre – Mitchells Plain,
  • Somerset Mall – Somerset West,
  • Whale Coast Mall – Hermanus,
  • and Eden Meander Lifestyle Centre – George.

During the winter period, WCBS pays tribute to blood donors, or as they refer to them, local heroes, by giving each donor who successfully donates blood a pair of WCBS hero-inspired socks.

“Heroes don’t get cold feet; they step up and save lives. Join us this Saturday and help support the many patients who need blood during this crucial period,” Carli added.

If you are between 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you should be able to donate. Donors who suffer from colds and flu can only donate again once they are symptom-free. For more information or to find your closest blood donation clinic, please visit www.wcbs.org.za, download the WCBS App, or send a WhatsApp to 060 549 7244.
