It will now be possible to book online to renew your driver’s licence in the Tshwane district. A new online booking system is set to alleviate the backlog.

Amazing news! South Africans will soon be able to renew their driver’s licences in a speedy and time efficient manner thanks to a new online booking system being piloted in the Tshwane municipality.

The system is going to revolutionalise the way South Africans get their new driver’s licence cards. Previously we shared a story about how the City of Johannesburg plans to better the process by revamping the licencing centres but this is even more exciting.

The Online Company South Africa is the system provider and it is currently implemented in Akasia, Waltloo, Centurion and Bronkhorstspruit. This new booking system allows users to make an appointment to renew their driver’s licence and also offers a delivery service.

“To resolve the 5-year cycle peaks the time for online appointments made sense to enhance service delivery. The courier delivery option is intended to offer convenience for those who cannot afford the time wasted to return and queue again for the collection” – Anton van der Merwe, owner of the Online Company South Africa

The delivery service will deliver throughout Johannesburg but the fee you are charged will depend on your location. For example, most places within Joburg will cost R96,45 and delivery to places like Hartbeespoort Dam and Vereeniging will cost around R414,41. Delivery to Rustenberg will cost around R204,34.

The system will not charge a booking fee, and should you opt out of delivery, you can collect the card yourself. Booking online will streamline the process but you will still need to go into a licencing centre to pay for your new card and provide the required documentation. The system just allows for a faster method of getting face-to-face with the right people. No more waiting in queues.

“In respect of the fee to renew no payment is as yet accepted via online. However, this option is clearly needed as our online support-desk is flooded with requests from clients to do so. There is no doubt that such payments are the modern way to go. The option will be negotiated in the near future,” – Anton van der Merwe, owner of the Online Company South Africa

Another thing to note when using the online booking system, you will not need to do an eye test, however, you will need to supply an optometrist certificate.

The new booking system was inspired by Nelson Mandela Bay’s booking system for licence renewals which was rolled out earlier this year. Their system allows the motorist to book appointments via telephone or through machines installed at the Uitenhage and Korsten centres.

These are some exciting times for South Africa and it is great to see new systems being implemented to help streamline tedious tasks.
