The newly opened Perlemoen in Hermanus has earned a place on La Liste’s “World Hidden Gem” list for 2023, a remarkable achievement for the team.

Hermanus, South Africa (13 December 2022) – Jannie Malherbe and Ryan Scholefield’s restaurant Perlemoen has been honoured as one of the “World Hidden Gems” of 2023 by La Liste.

South African gastronomy is rising as more and more of our restaurants earn international accolades. Perlemoen joins Klein JAN which earned the hidden gem from La Liste accolade in 2021. And many others that have been named world bests.

Perlemoen can be found in the historic old Harbour, offering waterfront dining with the best view in Hermanus. The restaurant is located right on the water and down out of the wind’s way. It gets views of the moody Cape days as well as being the prime spot for watching whales.

The restaurant specialises in locally sourced food with seafood being a highlight on the menu.

“Drink in the view of Hermanus harbour alongside your seafood at the hidden gem of Perlemoen, a stone fisherman’s shack on the coast 120km south of Cape Town. This was the site of the town’s first abalone hatchery – called perlemoen in South Africa – and is the only restaurant dedicated to serving the speciality fresh out the sea. Jannie and Annabella Malherbe restored the building and opened their no-reservation, BYO restaurant in May 2022. Tasting plates of abalone include carpaccio, ceviche, risotto and abalone Benedict, alongside an abundance of other local seafood.” – La Liste
