A primary school in Pietermaritzburg has just gotten a slice of its own massive storybook to connect with learners with a stunning audio-visual mural:
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (26 January 2024) — Mural makeovers are exciting enough as it is. But add an audio-visual element, and you create an entirely new perspective on the thrills!
Athlone Primary School Pietermaritzburg recently got its very own audio-visual mural dubbed ‘The Nature of Things’.
Designed by Jono Hornby who painted ‘The Nature of Things’ alongside Lelo Mncwango, ‘The Nature of Things’ tells a vivid story.
According to the mural’s organisers, Jackal & Hide, the school’s staff, from Grade R teachers to the principal, helped shape the mural greatly by giving insight into life as a child and what children navigate.
Soon, various themes that speak to children (conflict resolution, friendship, growing together and the joy of being different among others) were weaved into a wonderful story of Benjamin Bunny that accompanies the mural.
Now, you’re probably wondering where the audio comes in. Well, thanks to a special QR code, anyone with a phone can scan the code and access the story as told by Bianca Jane Pieters and written by Jacqui Hiltermann while enjoying the visuals as if they were massive pages from a storybook!
Additionally, an adorable postbox is being installed so that children can write letters to ‘Mother Nature, which Ms Sebastian, the school’s guidance counsellor, will look after.
Meanwhile, in other art news that’s left us feeling all the excitement, Dr Esther Mahlangu’s iconic art car has finally returned home and will be on display as part of her lifetime exhibition ‘Then I Knew I Was Good At Painting’.
