New pitches for sports, improved fixtures, and better lighting have all been part of a rollout of facelifts for public facilities across Cape Town:

Cape Town, South Africa (07 March 2025) — A number of key upgrades have been wrapped up by the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Parks Department to result in public facilities enjoying newfound facelifts!

From new synthetic pitches in Khayelitsha and Delft to lighting up Elsies River’s public facilities and supporting a new roof for the Retreat Civic Centre, the Recreation and Parks Department has crossed a number of key projects off its ‘to do’ list for the community’s betterment.

“The upkeep of our recreational facilities is a massive undertaking, considering the very long list of assets,” explains Mayco Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

Councillor Higham adds that the completion of these projects speaks a commitment to providing quality, safe spaces for sport and recreation.

“I encourage our communities to make full use of the facilities, and to help us protect them from theft, vandalism and other anti-social behaviour.”

Facilities That Got Facelifts

  • Site B Khayelitsha—a synthetic pitch
  • Bellville Sports Field—A hockey pitch
  • Delft Integrated Recreation Facility—a synthetic pitch (phase completion)
  • Elsies River Integrated Recreation Facility—Lighting fixtures at the swimming pool, library parking and plaza (phase completion)
  • Harleyvale Stadium—Replacement of the synthetic hockey pitch (phase completion)
  • Vygieskraal Stadium—A rugby field parking area in line with the Vygieskraal ‘master plan’ (phase completion).
  • Retreat—Contractor handed over the Civic following the completion of the roof replacement project.

The facelifts were underway from September last year, and their milestones were achieved in late January.
